The classic sports car, featuring a rare racing fuel tank, is back to factory fresh glory and is ready for your bid at Mecum Auctions.

Mecum Auctions is one of the best auction houses in the United States. They always seem to have an amazing set of cars available at their auctions, be they supercars, muscle cars or classic sports cars. Quite often, what Mecum can find is some of the rarest examples of cars in the world. Such as this 1965 Chevrolet Corvette, one of just 41 produced with a N03 36.5-gallon fuel tank, and Bloomington Gold certified as well.

This remarkable Corvette was originally optioned by Dave Parsons of Merriam, Kansas, who bought the car to use it on the racing circuit. He specified a lot of desired equipment for the car, which included the L84 327 ci and 375 hp fuel-injected engine, the M20 four-speed transmission, G81 3.70 Positraction rear axle and the F40 special suspension. But the standout feature is that 36.5-gallon racing fuel tank. That helps to make this car so rare. Other options also include the P91 4-Ply nylon blackwall tires, P48 cast aluminum knock-off wheels and the N11 off-road exhaust. This Corvette might also be one of just six to combine the racing fuel tank and the L84 engine, in its final year of availability.

Parsons used the car in Autocross before he competed in SCCA B-Production racing events, with sponsorship from Stafford Performance Racing. The car was then put into storage in the mid-1970s, and it soon passed through a few owners before finally falling into the hands of Jay Stahl in the late 1980s. Stahl and Gary Bosselman, two Corvette judges, restored the car over a 20-year period to its factory fresh condition with only original and NOS components used in the restoration. The car still has its original, numbers-matching 327 ci C8 engine, for example.

This car is certainly a remarkable survivor with so many original components. This extends from the engine to its suspension and its knock-off wheels. The stunning Silver Pearl color helps this Corvette to stand out, and the fact the black interior has its original black leather seats is a remarkable fact. There is plenty of equipment inside, too, such as the AM/FM radio and the telescopic steering wheel. Parsons also made sure that the Corvette had a Z01 comfort and convenience group, including a no-glare day/night rearview mirror plus back-up lights. This car will go under the hammer at Mecum’s 2022 Indy auction from May, 13-21.
