Ankle straps are a super handy and effective training tool typically paired with a cable machine to work the lower body muscles such as the glutes (butt), hamstrings, abductors, and adductors. This is a form of isolation training that allows you to really focus on these muscles individually as opposed to compound or multi-joint movements (e.g., squats, deadlifts, etc).

What’s the advantage of that? While compounds are non-negotiable for building mass and strength, isolation movements can allow for a more pronounced contraction and focus that may actually enhance your gains.

Let’s look at the best ankle straps on the market with everything you need to know and a detailed buying guide for choosing the best option for you on this list.

An ankle strap is a training accessory that’s commonly used with cable machines and resistance bands to train the muscles of the core and lower body such as the abdominals, glutes, hamstrings and hip muscles. Users attach the straps around their ankles and secure the buckles to the cables or bands.

They are typically made from a strong neoprene and/or nylon material and use velcro to fasten them around the ankles. They come in different shapes, designs and colors.

We’ll go more into detail after going through our favorite ankle strap picks for this year.

While we briefly mentioned the advantage of using ankle straps, let’s go into greater detail about why you could benefit from them if you don’t already use them for your gym or home sessions.

Cable exercises are some of the best pieces of training equipment because they offer constant tension through every phase of an exercise. However, they also typically allow for better freedom of movement than many machines. That means you can better adjust and use different angles to find the most comfortable training position for you.

Add in some ankle straps and you have a simple way to add variety to your lower body training.

Another benefit of using a cable machine and ankle straps is you can progress in increments. Unless you’re using a specialized machine this can be difficult to do especially if trying to do bodyweight exercises for the hip muscles.

Cables allow you to start out very light and without having to support your body weight. Then if you get stronger, no problem, just increase the weight on the machine stack either by moving to the next weight up on the stack or using a machine weight or small weight plate to add more resistance in even smaller increments.

This also makes using straps quite safe as you build up your glutes and hips.

We also cannot forget their generally low price point and portability which make ankle straps perfect for really anywhere!

Check out our review of the best cable machines that you can use at home or in your personal gym.

While we could honestly recommend any of the awesome options on this list, we chose the DMoose ankle straps because we know they make quality and functional products that provide a good value overall. It also helps that a lot of people have had an excellent experience using them and these are perfect for both men and women.

One thing that we noticed first and foremost is the wide selection of colors/patterns and this will surely appeal to the stylish lifters.

The straps are made from 7mm thick neoprene padding for support and you should expect that these will not twist around on your ankle during your workouts thanks to the improved fastening system. Made from premium stitching they should also hold up both functionally and aesthetically.

At 10 inches long and adjustable, DMoose ankle straps are suitable for just about anyone and they’re adaptable to just about any cable machine. Stainless steel D rings are strong and should stand up to a lot of resistance.

Note: Make sure to choose the proper quantity when ordering as they come in singles or pairs.

DMoose was founded by Mussayab Ehtesham (aka Moose) and now you know where they came up with the brand name.

Ehtesham was born in Pakistan but earned a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Western Ontario. He then worked nine years as a project manager in the automotive consulting industry before embarking on a journey to become an entrepreneur.

But in 2016, the ambitious Mussayab developed a bacterial infection and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). He was told by doctors that this condition could not be treated but refused to accept that as his fate.

Not only did he overcome the health issue but this sparked a passion for health and fitness and his mission from that point on was to create a platform where people could get the right information on starting their health and fitness journey.

“We believe you can accomplish your dreams, no matter where you start. We believe you can face any challenge and persevere until you win. We believe in the value of life-long learning, curiosity, and growth. We don’t tolerate excuses. We keep pushing forward to earn our goals, and we help others do the same.”

Since first opening in 2017, the company has served thousands of customers, released a supplement line, launched a boxing series and most recently launched a heavy weightlifting equipment line.

They also have various facilities and are headquartered in Buffalo Wyoming with operations in Charlotte, North Carolina and Los Angeles, California.

We also really like Gymreapers gear as we’ve reviewed their products in a few different categories.

These are top-notch straps that look great aesthetically and are offered in a few different solid colors such as pink, purple, black, red, cyan, mint, and ranger green.

Like the editor’s pick, these straps are made from comfortable and breathable 7mm neoprene material that also adds a lot of support. Strong velcro and reinforced stitching gives peace of mind that the straps will not come undone when performing all of your exercises with challenging weights.

Straps are 10 inches in length and 4 inches wide so you won’t have to worry about them not being substantial under heavier loads.

And what’s not to love about a lifetime product guarantee!

You really cannot go wrong with anything from gymreapers.

Gymreapers products are “created by athletes for athletes”. We’re talking record-holding powerlifting, IFBB professional athletes and trainers.

The fact that the company has their products extensively tested by these many individuals says something about what you’re getting. They use the highest quality materials and construction methods to ensure a very durable product that does what it’s supposed to and exceedingly well.

Now one for the ladies… although many of our picks are for both genders.

FITGIRL straps add a stylish element but we don’t believe they lack in functionality, durability, comfort and overall quality. The focus though is on comfort and fitting the female ankle which is why they designed the straps with thick neoprene cushioning.

And unlike a lot of other ankle straps, FITGIRL designed their straps with one buckle which makes it easier to put on, take off and adjust. Plus, your workouts should be quieter seeing as there won’t be two buckles clinging against each other.

These straps are meant for lighter to medium resistance.

Note: If purchasing, keep in mind that there’s an option to buy one or two straps.

As you might expect, the FITGIRL team consists of a range of fitness enthusiasts. Their products are extensively tested and they use what they sell every day. If that doesn’t give you confidence in their offerings then we don’t know what would.

The brand does not believe in a one-size-fits-all product because they realize that men and women are different and sometimes they have different needs.

If you prefer products designed specifically for women then this is a great choice.

With a name like Ironbull you’d have to expect some hardcore ankle straps.

They are constructed using strong heavy nylon that can handle intense loads. Velcro straps are super strong and easy to put on and take off. They are adjustable and fit any size ankle.

Oh, and what we also really like about these is that unlike some of the other options you get a pair so you don’t have to keep switching ankles during your workouts.

And we also cannot forget about the awesome 3D logo that’s printed on the straps. There are those who definitely care about what their gear looks like and you get to choose from a few different colors – red, purple and mint.

These also come at a really good price and considering you get two of them.

Located in Quebec, Canada, Ironbull Strength is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of fitness equipment.

“Iron Bull Strength is not just a fitness brand offering top quality products. We empower men and women to dig deep within and grasp their inner beast“.

The mission of Iron Bull is to offer better quality products than the competition but at the lowest prices.

Harbinger is a household name in exercise equipment and they make the products to back it up.

These are padded 3-inch straps with double rings and are one size fits all with an adjustable closure system. It has plush shearling lining that is supposed to ensure a very comfortable experience.

We can always recommend products from Harbinger as they make stuff that works and lasts!

Note: Product is one strap.

Harbinger brand was founded in 1988 by David McCrane which means they’ve been creating some of the best products on the market for over 30 years.

The story behind the company is interesting. They first started with a wrist-stabilizing glove made to protect the wrists of skateboarders. However, he noticed how beneficial it is for people who lift weights.

Many don’t know this but David McCrane actually teamed up with legendary eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney to develop a premium line of lifting accessories. Since then, Harbinger has introduced many more high quality products to the market.

These straps are quite different from any of the others we’ve chosen to include in this product review.

What’s unique about it is the foot straps that wrap around the bottom of the foot which is perfect for exercises such as glute kickbacks because it provides better ergonomics when kicking the legs back behind your body.

Fightech ankle straps also have 3 attachment points which makes training your lower body in different directions much more comfortable and controlled.

They use a 9.5mm thick neoprene padding which apparently makes them among the most comfortable on the market. The strap is made of very strong nylon and the rings are reinforced.

“FIGHTECH™ is a family business focused on producing and refining our custom line of sports and health products. We stand behind every piece of gear we sell and want you to be satisfied with them. If for any reason our products don’t work for you, just send them back and we will promptly refund you no questions asked.”

These are another great option for women that includes two ankle straps, a medium resistance band, a waterproof carry bag, and video tutorial which isn’t something the other picks on this list offer.

The band is a great addition especially for lower body training and for the price you get a decent amount of accessories.

Evoness ankle straps are soft and thick and are supposed to hug the ankles to ensure they stay put no matter the exercise. They come with one buckle that’s very durable and makes using the straps more enjoyable. They’ve also double stitched the straps so you can train with confidence.

There are only two colors but pink and green seem to be good choices in this case.

It’s also hard to beat the fact that if you don’t find the ankle straps suitable for you, the company does offer a 90-day refund policy.

Evoness ankle straps were made for busy women who still want to get in shape and achieve the body of their dreams. They offer an attractive fitness bundle for a very attractive price.

We also like this option from IPR Fitness as it has a more unique design.

A lot of research and development went into bringing this patented product to market and they believe you’ll never go back to using conventional ankle straps after trying these out. While we cannot make that claim. Some may prefer this option.

As you can see from the photos, this contraption wraps around the back of the shoe and under the heel. The harness makes it an excellent choice for butt training and a secure feeling when you’re working out. It’s both lightweight and very strong.

The components are military-grade for max quality and the price is definitely reflective of that. They also use a proprietary foam for comfort and snugness.

Note: Make sure to choose whether you want to purchase a single strap or pair.

IPR Fitness is veteran-owned and operated based in Irvine, California. Their products are handcrafted in the USA with ethical manufacturing practices.

They’ve proudly perfected their ergonomic cable machine attachments having earned awards for their patents with many more designs in the works.

When it comes to choosing an ankle strap, there are a few things we recommend considering first.

Do you prefer a certain color, design, or material? The beauty of having multiple options is that you can pick a product based on what you like.

For example, some have thicker padding than others, some have one buckle instead of two and you may want a glute kickback strap instead of just an ankle strap.

These straps vary in their features so you should have a basic understanding of the differences to ensure you pick the one that best suits your needs.

When it comes to padding you want to make sure this part of the strap is adequate. When lifting more than lighter loads, you don’t want to feel discomfort and pain from the strap digging into your lower legs. Our picks provide sufficient cushioning although some more than others. A lot of the straps you’ll see are cushioned with a thick layer of neoprene material that protects against the resistance of the cable machine or bands. Many exercisers also wear socks for added comfort.

Straps typically have one or two buckles that attach to the cable pulley or band. There are a few differences you should know about before choosing.

One buckle usually makes adjusting, putting on and taking off the straps easier compared to two buckles. However, the latter can usually handle more weight whereas a single buckle is better for lighter and moderate weight.

There’s definitely a tradeoff.

You also want to consider some details regarding the straps and the design. For example, there are basic ankle straps, straps with glute kickbacks loops, and harnesses that wrap around the shoe.

Basic ankle strap – You can’t go wrong with conventional ankle straps that are simpler in design, more affordable, and very versatile compared to other designs.

Ankle strap with glute kickback loop – These designs may be superior to basic ankle straps for some users. That’s because there’s a loop that wraps under the heel which may feel more natural when kicking your leg back.

Ankle/foot harness – Like the IPR Fitness harness system, this option is focused on providing a more comfortable and controlled experience when training the glutes. It secures to the shoe both on the back of the foot/shoe and at the bottom underneath the foot.

I could see how this would give the exerciser more confidence during kickbacks. However, a drawback could be that due to the strap under the foot, it may feel like you need to work harder to stabilize the foot in position. In this case, many prefer the basic strap or a simpler loop attached to the strap.

You should also pay attention to the size of the straps. If you must, measure your ankles and compare to the length of the straps to ensure they will fit you. Most options are one-size-fits-all so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue however there are straps made specifically for women such as FITGIRL straps.

These were designed to give a better fit for women compared to a lot of the other options that are unisex.

Cost is of course important when choosing an ankle strap. But we’re not telling you to watch your spending (we’ll leave that to you or your financial counselor).

We’re referring to paying careful attention to what you’re actually purchasing. One common issue that seems to throw customers in a rage like no other is the fact that they purchased ankle straps thinking they were getting a pair when in fact the price was just for a single strap.

Before you make a purchase just make sure that you have the correct quantity selected to ensure this does not happen to you because it happens way too much.

So this one is sort of an extension from the last point because it’s important to know what you’re getting before you click on the buy button.

Do you want a pair of ankle straps or a single strap?

There are advantages to both however if you know what you want then unknowingly choosing the wrong option can be very inconvenient and frustrating.

Some people don’t want to deal with taking off and switching the straps between legs during their workouts. That’s why they prefer to have two straps. Make sure that you are getting two instead of one by double and triple-checking the product listing. You could even check the previously asked questions or reach out to the company to be sure.

However, we’ve noted this under each of our picks.

While this doesn’t mean we would never try a product from a lesser-known brand, it gives us peace of mind to know that we’re purchasing from a company who has a good reputation for making quality products worth their price.

Check out these 11 Best Lifting Straps Reviewed for 2022.

We’re confident that there’s something for everyone on this list of best ankle straps.

There are lots of benefits to using this workout accessory but the versatility they offer is perhaps the biggest. While squats, deadlift variations and hip thrusts are in our opinion very important, you should also do a few lower body isolation exercises too and ankle straps make this very possible and effective paired with a cable machine or even resistance bands.

You get a great contraction, better focus on specific muscle groups, more freedom to move compared to machines and more options than bodyweight-only exercises.
