FROM CHIEF P.K. JOHNSON

On Friday, May 6, 2022, at approximately 12:04 PM, a Millbrook police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Prattville Junction, near Caroline Drive. The vehicle, a 2022 Nissan Sentra, accelerated to Speeds up to 80 miles per hour, refusing to stop.

The vehicle continued southbound on Sandtown Road until reaching the 3800 block, at which point the vehicle suddenly pulled into the driveway of a residence. The driver abandoned the vehicle, which remained in gear and continued under its own power, unattended. The driver fled past the residence and towards a wooded area. During the foot pursuit, the subject fleeing was observed carrying a nylon bag, which he discarded. After a brief foot chase, the offender, later identified as Kendrick Lewis, a 30, of Montgomery, was apprehended.

The object the offender discarded was found to contain a large amount of plant material, which appeared to be marijuana, as well as drug paraphernalia. The offender was placed under arrest, being charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, Unlawful Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Attempting to Elude. Lewis was transported to the Millbrook Police Department, where he was processed and later transported to the Elmore County Jail, where he remains under a $9,000 bond.

I’m extremely proud of our officers that were involved in apprehending this subject. They took this individual quickly, without injury to the offender or themselves. The offender abandoned his vehicle, which remained in gear, fleeing the scene and allowing the vehicle to continue under its own power, which posed a threat to the offender, police officers, as well as vehicles parked on the property and a residence.

One of our officers physically had to catch up to the vehicle and take control of it, which more than likely prevented it from causing damage to the resident’s property.

This suspect unnecessarily placed himself and others in jeopardy by his actions. Obviously ,he knew he had illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia in his possession, as well as outstanding arrest warrants with our department and other agencies in the surrounding area. That said, he created additional consequences for himself by his actions yesterday, caused damage to a rental vehicle in his possession and for his troubles he went to jail tired, with more problems than he had when his day started.
